NOVEDADES PARA ENERO

Hi all,

The SoW Dev team have had a number of conversations and tried to take on board some of the suggestions, criticisms and feedback you've given over the past months. Here's what we've decided to do. (Note: this will not please all of the people all of the time. We know this. However, we've thought long and hard over the stuff we're ignoring, and the stuff we are implementing. Hopefully everyone can accept this :) )

1) Recon
There were various comments regarding the historical accuracy of the current system. However, we have decided to retain the current methods as they are fair for both sides, require a certain amount of skill and are an important game play balance.

2) Objective Repair
2a) Airfield Repair
There were several instances of airfields being knocked out and then returning to operation in what was felt to be a too quick manner. Knocking out some of the larger airfields required a lot of effort, and then they were repaired within a couple of phases. We've looked at the algorithm for repair, and are changing it to better represent what we think the repair curve should be. We're also introducing the concept of Repair Teams, which will be resources managed at a Meta level by the command teams. These will be a finite resource, and will increase the speed with which repairs are done.

2b) Airfield Craters
There were several requests to look at whether it was possible to "save" the coordinates of bombs exploding on airfields and put craters there, rather than the current method of spawning a crater randomly based on the damage level. I am pursuing this with no promises, but will be undertaking a test to see if lots of craters negatively impacts frame rates or spawning. Test 1 - With 500 craters on any airfield that's currently damaged in anyway (12 in total) there was a noticeable time to create the mission file, and load it, but spawning in at one of the damaged fields had zero impact on me, and flying over another one had zero impact. Seems craters don't appear as "dots"...?

2c) RDF/Freya repairs
These will remain as they are.

2d) Other types of objectives
We have looked at the possibility of allowing other objective types to repair. This may well be done in conjunction with repair teams, within limited parameters. For example allowing lightly damaged to return to fully operational, but never allowing Heavily damaged to be repaired. We are still looking at how we do this.

3) Objectives
One of the biggest issues we've had in SoW is with objectives and their destructibility. One minute they're immune to damage, and the next minute they're destroyed in seconds. All objective templates will be reviewed again to ensure they are fit for purpose and make sense. Additionally, there will be a new objective type which will follow a similar structure to the Airfields and work from the weight of bombs dropped in an area. These areas are intended to be polygonal shapes, following stock map areas that are visible from high altitude. This should aid the bombers allowing them to bomb from higher, and not have to worry searching out "dots" and have object spawn distances come into play.

4) Aircraft Stock
Next on the list of bugbears for both sides has been the issue of Aircraft stock. Both in "Dude, where's my plane?" type queries to the inequality of the resupply system. You'll be pleased to know we're hoping to bring a different dynamic with the new SoW.
4a) Aircraft will be tracked individually, given a serial number (I will need some help sourcing period serial numbers and werks numbers or a method to generate them). Each sortie you fly, you'll know which aircraft you're in (although you won't be able to choose the serial I'm afraid).
4b) Resupply will no longer be a free for all. Aircraft will go into the pool, but will NOT be able to be taken unless allocated to your squadron. This allocation will be done by the command teams via the web interface.

5) Maritime Convoys
Something we hoped to get in for last time, and failed. I'm still not sure exactly how they will work, but they will be part of the game.

6) AI Raids
There were lots of complaints about AI raids, they were too fast, too high, too low, too slow, gunners too effective, gunners not effective enough, too difficult to coordinate with, bombed the wrong targets.......the list went on.

There are currently three different types of AI Activity;
AI Recon, which we will be cutting back on the number of flights as few seem to make it anyway (even in unpopulated missions),
AI mini Raids, which are small flights of aircraft spawned via a submission and just intended to add some distraction and some other activity. These will remain as is.
AI Raids, which are the large escorted stuff that gets reported when they spawn in and go to bomb one of the active targets. There are a number of things we want to look at with regards these:
a) The ability to know which target they're going after.
B) What their flight path is.
c) When the next one is due.
d) There's also the requirement for "paid for targets" to be able to schedule the raids, allocate specific forces to it, and plan the route. This will be a major item for the website for the command teams. Exactly how this will work is still in discussion. It could be as simple as copying waypoints from a mis file into a text box and saving it, or might be interactive click on the map. I don't know.

7) Website changes
Obviously In order to accomplish all the above points, we're going to need to overhaul some elements of the website.

8) Events
One of the obvious things we noticed during the Long War was that the server was populated pretty much 24/7, but with lower total numbers. This, and the comments regarding "Events" led us to think how we could encourage specific times of day as "events" to drive player numbers up, while also making it integrate into the game play. One idea we have is that during specific times of the week there will be a "points multiplier" in effect. Targets destroyed AND reconned during this period will score higher than they would have done otherwise. If we make it attractive to the LW to come and bomb England, then we make it attractive to the RAF to defend it :) We've also considered a dedicated RAF offensive night, where those RAF players who insist on being on the wrong side of the channel will have at least a little more legitimacy for being there. :)

9) New Targets
Pretty self explanatory. We will be continuing to add new targets and target types to the campaign.

10) Miscellaneous

Numerous minor improvements, tweaks, balances, adjustments, bug-fixes, performance enhancements and countless other things that are small in themselves, but which are addressed in order to make the SoW system faster, better and more reliable.

Noticias frescas!

Quick update.

With the exception of one area of code, my refactoring is all but finished. Essentially I've taken something that worked, changed it, and it still works! I also have a plan of action. Finishing by the end of the month is going to be challenging to say the least but it's still my intent and goal.
