darthkata
Royal Air Force Typhoons will be likely heading south from the UK in 2009, possibly in the third quarter, as the type replaces the Tornado F3s now deployed in the Falklands. The Typhoons will succeed the F3s now based at Mount Pleasant Airfield to provide air defense for the disputed territory. The UK has had a permanent garrison on the Falklands since the war with Argentina in 1982. The F3 variant of the Tornado is presently due to be withdrawn completely from RAF service in 2011, though this date had previously been 2009. There had been considerable speculation during 2007 that the Typhoons would be deployed this year to support combat operations in Afghanistan, replacing units from Joint Force Harrier. However Tornado GR4s are to be used to take over the Harrier’s role in Afghanistan.
