(EP/AP).- Un avión C-5 de carga con 17 personas a bordo se ha estrellado cerca de la Base de la Fuerza Aérea de Dover, en el Estado de Delaware, según informaron fuentes oficiales locales. De momento no se ha informado de víctimas. El aparato, el de mayor tamaño del Ejército, se estrelló hacia las 6:45 horas locales (12:45, hora peninsular española), informó el director adjunto del Departamento de Seguridad Pública de Delaware, Allen Metheny. Guest MORK Posted April 3, 2006 Report Share Posted April 3, 2006 De la CNN WASHINGTON (CNN) -- An Air Force C-5 cargo jet crashed and broke into pieces Monday while trying to make an emergency landing near Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, Air Force officials said. Seventeen people were onboard, a Federal Aviation Administration source said. The condition of the crew was unknown, according to the Air Force. The crew of the C-5 Galaxy, the largest aircraft in the U.S. military inventory, declared an in-flight emergency and came down short of the runway at Dover about 6:30 a.m., officials told CNN. The C-5 was being operated by an Air National Guard unit, the officials said.(Watch how the plane cracked into three pieces -- 1:10) The FAA said the plane had taken off from Dover and crashed while attempting to return. Allen Metheny, assistant director in the Delaware Department of Public Safety, said some people were taken to hospitals with injuries, according to The Associated Press. Television images showed the plane had broken into at least three pieces, with the cockpit separated at a right angle from the rest of the fuselage. The plane's tail was not visible in the TV images. The military has 126 C-5s in its active and reserve inventory, according the Air Force's official Web site. The C-5 can carry 270,000 tons of cargo almost 2,500 miles on one load of fuel. PLEESKEN Posted April 4, 2006 Report Share Posted April 4, 2006 Coño!! tampoco quedo tan mal!! en el ejercito español con un par de puntos de soldadura y uniendo los cables del timon lo ponemos a volar otra vez , nosotros nos tiramos meses con el land rover sin marcha atras, habia que bajarse y empujarlo para maniobrar , como hagan lo mismo en las unidades acorazadas.... . Well, the answer is that the C-5 has a fire suppression system (FSS) on it. This was added to the C-5 after my accident in Oklahoma. Basically, it has nitrogen inerting system. When the airplane is fueled nitrogen is bubbled through the fuel to remove any oxygen. It keeps nitrogen in the free area above the fuel in the fuel tanks. This prevents the fuel from having oxygen to catch fire in the event of a fire. The C-5 is currently the only airplane to have this system. It was originally put on the B-1 bomber, and Parker Hannifin (the maker of the system) wanted to put it on the C-5 and C-141. The Military Airlift Command (MAC)was ready to reject the proposal when I had my accident. When it was determined that my accident was caused by a brake fire, MAC couldn't put it on the C-5 fast enough. The cockpit area of the latest accident broke just aft of the relief crew seats. The crewmember there were sprayed with jet fuel. It is the area were all the injuries occurred also. So maybe the FSS system saved a few lives. Y sobre la politica de la usaf... no lo sabes tu bien, a veces sacarle unas palabras a mi tio me lleva meses pero bueno, en este caso no me puso ninguna pega con estas fotos asi que no creo que haya problemas. Una cosita yo vi fotos iguales a esas pero de otros angulos en otro foro....asi que no hagas mucho misterio con si hay problemas con las fotos oh que cosas por que andan por toda la red..... Pues si te digo la verdad se muy poco sobre su carrera militar. Rara vez habla de ello. Lleva unos años retirados por problemas de salud (el gas mostaza en vietnam pasa factura). Le ofrecieron hacerse cargo de la base aerea... mm... no recuerdo el nombre, una de las que hay en New Jersey, pero prefirio quedarse de instructor de C5. Y poco mas se, se que fue un buen militar, tiene como 20 condecoraciones, incluida el corazon purpura de cuando le derribaron en vietnam.
